Alexandria's Genesis - Fact or fiction?

Update 12/8/2013: I had no idea that my random musings would gain so much attention. I know Alexandira's Genesis is scarcely written about, but I still found the response to be surprising. This post does not focus on the entire myth of Alexandria's Genesis, but more on the usage of the term being applied to people with pale skin, purple eyes, and dark hair. In no way, shape, or form, do I believe that a woman who does not have a period, but is still fertile, could possibly exist (this is one of the many symptoms described to exist in people who have the real Alexandria's Genesis, which isn't real at all, it's science fiction). They would be like the virgin Mary. However, people with pale skin, purple eyes, and dark hair do exist, and many people say they have "Alexandria's Genesis". This blog post is not meant to prove that Alexandria's Genesis is real or that it does exist, but that people who look like such fables, do.

I first discovered Alexandria's Genesis randomly a few years ago, for some reason I get the feeling it was while I was randomly browsing Wikipedia, which I sometimes like to do. But anyways, Alexandria's Genesis is supposedly a genetic condition where the person has dark hair, "fair" skin (meaning rather pale and of good complexion), and interesting purple to grey eyes. Many people speculate that there is no such thing as this, since the term itself came from a Science Fiction book, yet they didn't have any other answer for how these eyes came to be, or what the proper term for it is, so everyone, including me, were left to wonder. What is this?

Elizabeth Taylor has always been known for her unique violet/grey-hued eyes. Many believe this to be Alexandria's Genesis. (Image Source)

Well, I think I finally found the answer! Albinism! Though it's not full-blown albinism, if it was the person would be white as white can be, with blue eyes, and white hair. It's a certain kind of albinism, ocular albinism. I stumbled upon this while again, browsing wikipedia and trying to scrounge up more theories on the merle gene in dogs (which I'll blog about another time). It's quite interesting. The persons' eyes are generally lighter and can even look like albino eyes (blue but a certain unique shade of blue), but it just affects the eyes.

However, for Elizabeth Taylor, this would not be the case, since those with ocular albinism usually have their hair and skin affected equally, while Taylor has no effect on her hair and some effect to her skin and eyes. For her, it would be oculocutaneous albinism. Oculocutaneous albinism, affects the eyes and skin, but rarely the hair and it is possible for the hair to be dark, though that too is rather rare (usually it is a reddish pigment). More specifically, for miss Taylor, it would be OCA2, which does just that. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find an accurate picture for it, though the one above would work since they have hair and skin pigment.

But hey, Alexandria's Genesis sounds a heck of a lot cooler than oculocutaneous albinism OCA2, so why not keep the term?

  1. Actually, i personally think of alexandria genesis as a mutation within a mutation (of albinism). So instead of having no pigment in their hair, eyes or skin, they have good complexion, dark hair, and then dark purple/violet eyes. I know its weird, but its a theory i have :)

    1. Its actually an interesting theory and quite possible. I hope a scientist goes and does a study on it so we can know for sure!

  2. It was just a fan fiction, the guy that wrote it tried to tell people it was a joke later but no one believed him. Why? Maybe because most would wish this was true :)

    1. Many people like to apply familiar terms to things they cannot describe, in this case they saw purple or diluted eyes and thought Alexandria's Genesis existed. Technically it does, it just isn't called Alexandria's Genesis.

  7. it's not true though, someone just made it up in a fan fiction to justify their "mary-sue" being too perfect.

  8. Albinism is caused by the complete lack of pigments in skin and hair cells. I'm pretty sure there is no partial albinism, and in Elizabeth Taylor's case it was more a combination of dark hair and very blue eyes that made it seem that color - it is improbable that she actually had REAL purple eyes. Other effects of Alexandria's Genesis include the ability to be fertile without menstruation (a physical impossibility), an immune system resistant to all diseases (which is ridiculous), and the lack of the production of bodily waste (also not possible).

  9. It sounds like b.s. I read a blog that stated a girl that has Alexandra's genesis never has to go to the bathroom. How is that possible?

  10. This was a fan fiction idea. Where I grant that ocular and skin cell mutation are entirely possible, Alexandria's Genesis is fiction. I just read the author's rather bemused blog on the subject.

  11. I'm writing a creepypasta about Alexandria's Genesis, and would it be okay if I used this theory to explain how one of the characters has purple eyes but does not have Alexandria's Genesis?

  12. anyone who believes AG is a real disorder or mutation is a moron who needs to be banned from the internet. read some of the effects of this disorder, like no menstruation in women (while remaining fertile) or being practically immune to all diseases. it's amazing how gullible people are these days.

  13. Fun fact: The hair, the pale skin, and the eyes weren't all the symptoms made up. Read all the symptoms, you'll see it's not even close to real.

  15. Actually, there is no existing genetic condition that would cover the traits ascribed to Alexandria's Genesis (which includes literally shimmering pale skin a la Stephenie Meyer's vampires that is immune to burning and tanning which is physically impossible for skin with little or no pigmentation as real life albinos and pale-skinned people can attest to, perfect 20/20 vision immune to ocular degeneration which real-life albinos who typically suffer from poor eyesight can once again confirm as impossible or, at best, highly improbable, little to zero body waste production which would obviously lead to poisoning due to the build up of toxic materials in the body) and its inventor, Cameron Miquelon, had admitted to it being a plot device she created in 1998 to make her Daria fanfiction original characters "more special". Oculocutaneous albinism is a real thing and there are real people, such as Elizabeth Taylor, who have purple eyes, but Alexandria's Genesis is not real.

  16. Hmm... There is definitly a diseease giVing you purple eyes, pale and fair skin, black hair, no hair on body except on head, eyebrows and lashes, no periods(but is still fertile)very sttrong immune system, but under a different name. Alexandrias genesis is a mixture of myth and fact, as nobody can not produce waste; its impossible. And oh, it can only be found in females

  17. It actually is possible to not have periods and be fertile, I only know this because my sister has PCOS. She has never had a period (she is 23) yet has been told by doctors that if she were to fall pregnant she is more likely to have triplets or quadruplets than a single baby.. So she decided not to have kids! After reading a few posts about this I genuinely think it to be true, it's just a shame there isn't enough knowledge on it..
